One of the founding members of our Club, Sydney Recreational Vehicle Association,

now Sydney Off Road Racing Association, Neil Lennox, passed away yesterday,

Sunday 17 ^th July. May he Rest in Peace. Funeral information to follow.

Neil was enthusiastic about his newfound hobby of off road racing, the travel and the camping with the family. Trips to places and properties looking for tracks for our Club to play on. And then the racing. Neils first events were down at Wandandian, near Nowra on the south coast, Colo Motorsport Park, Garland Valley (Putty) and Bailyana. All Club racing. His first foray into any type of event was at Hattah , in the mallee country in the northwestern corner of Victoria, in a Volkswagen with almost standard suspension. Got beached a few times, long days racing and a tough introduction to the sport, but he was hooked. Neil and the family competed at most events in NSW after that, even claiming the Club Outright Champion Driver and Class 2 (1650 Class now) Champion Driver in 1981.

Our thoughts are with the family at this time.

You are invited to Thornleigh Car Club's Summer Skids Khanacross on Saturday March 22nd 2025.

This event will follow the same awesome value for money format as has been previously run at the TCC Dirt N Dust Challenge Khanacross, being conducted on the same tracks RallySchool use at Colo Racing Precinct.

There will be a minimum of 6 tests run on the day, though aiming for 12, with a combination of technical and open courses.

Motorsport’s for Everyone

Well, it’s been a few months now since our adventure out to Finke, but it seems like a good time to say thanks to all those who helped us along the way. It started back in August 2023 when my good mate Vaughn Hogan told me he was thinking of selling his off-road racing buggy. Vaughn and I had represented Australia in 2015 in Disabled Waterskiing and became good mates with a common love for water skiing and adrenaline sports. Vaughn had the ‘Finke Off-road Race’ on his bucket list, and in 2021, he bought a Can-Am Maverick Racing Buggy with the intention of competing.

For Vaughn, there were additional hurdles to overcome. Vaughn had been involved in a motorbike accident in 2007, where he suffered a spinal cord injury and lost the use of his legs. This meant the buggy had to be modified with hand controls to allow him to operate the accelerator and brake. The next hurdle was making sure the buggy met all the requirements of Motorsport Australia so he could compete in ‘Off-Road Motorsports’ events. This was a major challenge in itself, and over the next seven months, adjustments to the roll cage were made to allow Vaughn to transfer in and out of the buggy while also meeting the safety requirements of Motorsport Australia.

Upon completing the buggy and a few outings to friends’ farms, it looked like it was going to be too hard to make Finke a reality. Vaughn was struggling to find anyone who could commit to helping him with the goal and had a buyer lined up to purchase the buggy. On the phone that night, Vaughn told me the news, and I asked how I could help out. A few days later, I made the commitment, and we started putting together a list of what needed to be done and how we would go about meeting all the requirements to make Finke a reality.

Firstly, I needed to join a motorsports club, then I needed my navigator’s license, and lastly, we needed to compete in a couple of off-road races to qualify for Finke. We spoke at length about our physical limitations, and both of us accepted the risks of motorsports, just like everyone else who competes. We were well aware of our limitations and each other’s attitude toward risk. But we also knew we were not going out there to win. We just wanted to compete and do our best.

I made a phone call to Ian Irons at the Sydney Off-road Racing Club, and I was very thankful that our paths had crossed. After a few conversations, both Vaughn and I joined the Sydney club, and our journey began. It was decided that Nabiac would be a good starting point for our entry into off-road motorsports, as it was early in the season and would allow us to get some time racing, and more importantly, in the sand. We prepped the buggy, and Ian called ahead to warn the Nabiac Committee that a quadriplegic and his navigator with one leg were coming up to race. (I wish I was a fly on the wall in that meeting!) What an eye-opener.

Having never competed in any motorsports, it sure was a steep learning curve. The committee at Nabiac was very supportive, and it was a fantastic introduction to motorsports. But man, did we have nerves! Things seemed to happen so fast: "Be here, be there, don’t do this, make sure you do that," and as fast as you can. The weekend was tough—nerves, stress, heat, and fatigue from racing. We soon realized the buggy wasn’t set up well enough, and we would need to make some adjustments for our next race. Fatigue had started to set in toward the end of the race as Vaughn struggled with the steering while the buggy was thrown about in the sand, and our navigation setup was definitely not adequate. But we finished, and there were smiles on our faces as we crossed the finish line. We stayed upright, had a lot of fun, and met some really nice people who had gone out of their way to help us over the weekend.

Over the next few weeks, we determined that the wheels we had on the buggy had a wider offset than ideal, which was causing feedback through the steering as we maneuvered the buggy around the track. It became apparent that maybe the power steering in the buggy was also not providing the assistance Vaughn required, and after some research, a power steering booster and some new rims were ordered. We also set up a more user-friendly GPS navigation system, which was easily managed on the run.

Unfortunately, our next planned race in Sydney was canceled, so we decided to head down to Victoria to compete in the Rainbow 480 Desert Race. We needed more time in the sand, but we also wanted to see how the buggy handled with the upgraded power steering and wheels. Some faulty wiring in the power steering unit gave us an anxious 12 hours leading into the race, but what’s racing without late nights and last-minute dramas? Rated as one of Australia’s toughest off-road races, Vaughn and I were feeling very anxious leading into the event. People had described the race as being tougher than Finke and told us not to be discouraged if we didn’t finish. Like Nabiac, the committee at Rainbow was very accommodating and supportive of what we were doing. But we were very aware that we had a lot of eyes on us. We were not aware of anyone else with that level of disability competing in motorsports—a guy in a wheelchair driving and his navigator only has one leg. Should we be there? Should we be allowed to race? Would we be competitive enough? And then, on top of that, we had all the racing nerves. Where do we need to be? What’s the schedule? How much fuel? What tire pressure?

Vaughn had enlisted the help of Rod and Kodi Visser to support us over the weekend. It was during this weekend that we began to feel like we understood the formalities and where and when we needed to be. Rod (Comfab Racing), having been in the race circuit since the early 80s, and his son Kodi, really helped us with our scheduling and race strategies. We had one goal in mind: we wanted to finish the race. The Rainbow 480 Desert Race was just what we needed. In our minds, we felt that if we could get through Rainbow, then Finke was achievable.

We were worried about fatigue setting in, as it was a significantly longer race than Nabiac, but the modifications we had made to the buggy had done just what we had hoped. The steering was significantly lighter, and the feedback from the front end was minimal. We finished Rainbow in 7.5 hours of total driving time, with over five hours behind the wheel on Sunday (Day 2 of the event). Vaughn held up, the car held up, and we finished (24 out of the 52 cars did not). By now, Finke was in our sights. Rainbow had given us some experience and confidence that we could get it done.

We needed another Motorsport Australia race to qualify, so the Pooncarie Desert Dash was locked in—another long race (422km) with some fast sections and sand. Going into Pooncarie, we had a lot more confidence in the buggy and our ability. We had worked out the racing schedule and when and where we needed to be. Vaughn needed about 2.5 hours to get ready to be in the buggy by 7 a.m. so all this was taken into consideration. It’s not as easy as throwing on a race suit, grabbing a banana, and hopping in the buggy (that’s me!). For Vaughn, it’s a process, and it takes time. We had also been working on getting in and out of the buggy. We spent a lot of time on this. Vaughn had set up a mattress on the floor alongside the buggy in his garage so he could practice getting in and out without falling on the concrete. Getting the routine sorted out and building up the muscles required to make it as quick as possible within the timeframe required by Motorsport Australia.

Pooncarie was also the final box we needed to tick to meet the Finke entry requirements. We had another great weekend, finishing in 37th place. Our goal was to finish the race, and we got it done. Nearly 30% of the cars that started did not finish, so to us, that was an achievement in itself. We were checking boxes off, and in our minds, Pooncarie was the last one. We sent our entry off and started planning for Finke. Our goal was to finish.

It’s a tradition at Finke that upon getting to Finke and back, a competitor receives a railroad spike as a memento. Vaughn had his sights on a ‘Finke Survivor Spike.’ To get the spike, we had to not only get to Finke but also get back to Alice Springs. The trip was planned, the buggy was prepared, accommodation was booked, and things were starting to feel real. We were going to Finke. Bucket list.

Like all motorsports, off-road racing is expensive—not just in terms of the buggy, maintenance, and fuel, but also the travel associated with it. With the support of Jason Reid and the amazing community where Vaughn lives in Bright, Victoria, we went up to Finke with a newfound sense of duty. First, we wanted to show that we could do it (Finke and back), but we also wanted to make those who had stepped up to support us proud. It’s a real team effort at Finke because of the remoteness, and we were not let down. Vaughn’s wife Kelly (who had been to all of our events leading up to Finke) and my partner Sharon led the team. We enlisted my nephew to head to Finke with the support vehicle, carrying all our food, fuel, tools, and parts. Then, a good friend of Vaughn’s made the trip out in his helicopter to follow us down the track, record the event, and help out if required. Rod & Kodi Visser (and team), who were also racing, were a huge support in the lead-up to and during the event.

Being in central Australia is pretty amazing, but off-road racing out there is on another level. The atmosphere in Alice Springs throughout the lead-up and event is hard to describe. The thrill of the sport was clearly evident among the competitors and spectators. Finke was an amazing experience—a tough track through some amazing countryside. Not everything went to plan, and on Day 1, just before we left Alice on our way to Finke, we got notification that our support vehicle had broken down and it was unlikely it would make it. We left Alice not knowing what to expect when we arrived—whether we would have food, a swag, or even fuel for the return trip. Our crew really stepped up and came to the rescue.

The rain in the lead-up to the race helped keep the dust down, but about 3 km into the race, we drove straight through a deep puddle of water that not only saturated us but also created havoc with the muddy water on the helmet lenses. With Vaughn using one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on the throttle, it was up to me to try and clean his visor. Anyone who’s been in a race harness knows there’s considerable restriction in movement, but after slowing down and a few failed attempts, we managed to get the visor clean and kept moving.

Our limitations were evident but not unmanageable. Finke was the first race we had competed in that was not a loop, and as we were at the bottom of the grid, it meant we didn’t have to worry so much about the big trophy trucks lapping and dusting us at speeds we could only dream of. We had a relatively clean run down and managed to pass a few cars along the way. I probably need to confess: not all of them were moving. Some were upside down, some were missing pieces, and some were under tow on the service road beside us. But we were still there on the track and heading south.

It was a relief when we powered into Finke to discover that our crew had swapped out the recovery vehicle and were a couple of hours away with our supplies. Our crew had really stepped up. It’s hard to fathom how remote the Finke community is. We were 240 km from Alice Springs as the crow flies but about five hours away by road. Besides the finish line, there was a game of Aussie Rules being played by the local Indigenous community on a pitch that was pure dirt—no grass to be seen. Some kids wore boots, and some were barefoot. Definitely a tough place to live, and I’m guessing you need to be tough to live there.

The buggy had fared well on the way down, so after a refuel and a couple of quick checks, we were ready for the return trip. A steak on the BBQ, followed by fireworks and a few stories around the campfire, and it was off to bed under the stars in preparation for the return to Alice the next day.

Our claim to fame on Day 2 on the way home was passing Craig Lowndes in the Chevrolet Silverado production ute. We last saw him in our rearview mirror, and with the chopper overhead following us, it would have made for some great footage. It was, however, a little disappointing that there was no dust trailing the Chevy when we passed and that it was sitting on a funny angle. But we’ll take the win.

Coming back into Alice was surreal. We had done it—‘Finke and Back.’ Coming under the Finke finishing banner, we shared a fist pump, knowing that we had done what we set out to achieve. We didn’t go there to win. We went to race, and we went to finish. And what an experience it had been. It had taken us across four different states, we had met some great people, and we had ticked off a bucket list item. We had raced, we had finished (70th out of 122), and we now had a Finke Survivor Spike to prove it.

Like all sports, there are a lot of people out there who are accepting, accommodating, and supportive of those around them. Motorsport is no different. Vaughn and I were both lucky enough to have met some of those people on our journey—some of whom are mentioned above and some of whom are not. But to all those who helped us along the way, THANK YOU. We are extremely grateful.

Cleared some shrubbery to give better line of sight for Toyosports time keepers. Fitted aerials to backhoe to make Uhf come back to life. How good is that. Excavator door with the broken window has been straightened and a new acrylic one and a closing mechanism fitted to door as well. Thank you Stuart, Paul , Adam, Ruby & Frances. Big Saturday. And then Sunday. Wow! Mine shaft/ Rally sprint section is really coming together to make it a lot more weather proof going forward.

NSW State Round, Colo Challenge.

The NSWORC at Colo Motorsport Park is not far away now. 1st & 2nd June. Looking forward to seeing some classic vehicles taking part. This will be the first event for the Classic class since its inception and there is some interesting machines out there still wanting to come out & play.

The track has been extended with the inclusion of the old rally sprint track including the old section called the mineshaft. Makes each full lap of the course 8.3 Klm now. Should make for some exciting racing.

Maurie has generously offered his service to Off Road Racing over the past 50 years, being competitor, organiser, event director, land owner, CAMS NSW Off Road Advisory Panel Chair, member National Off Road Commission just to list a few.

His dedication and commitment to our sport has certainly made a huge difference and we cannot thank him enough his tireless effort.

He was a founding and life member of the Kempsey Macleay Off Road Club and has assisted with the organisation of many off road racing events.

Maurie was the first to offer his assistance at the Milbrodale Mountain Classic event which he attended annually. His support, knowledge and friendship has always been appreciated and we will miss him at our event.

In 2018 he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his service to motor sport & the community of Kempsey & Macleay.

Maurie, we thank you for your commitment to our sport, the memories and friendship. You will be sorely missed by the entire off road racing family!

This is a combined event. There will be outright winners declared for competing in both events. Last year's winners will need to defend their title!!

SOORA kicks-off 2024 khanacross season.

The intermittent rain did little to dampen the spirits at round one of SORRA’s khanacross Championship on Saturday at Colo Park.
With plenty of regulars back on track in 2024, it was exciting to see some new faces in the mix for the first event of 2024.
As always, Junior Driving training was available on the Saturday morning and offered some new Juniors a chance to get some instruction behind the wheel with some seasoned ( and very well-seasoned) drivers.
One of our new junior drivers, Brody Myers, had never driven a car before backing his Subaru off the trailer and tackled the stages like a champion. Well done Brody!!

It was also first time out for Flynn Lovett in the Mini Cooper and Daniel Johnston in the Nissan.
Lovett unfortunately had gearbox issues late in the day but show plenty of speed and car control. While Johnston was Mr Consistent all day, completing every stage and gradually improved his times throughout the day. Awesome job Daniel and Flynn!

Despite the rain fall, the sandy-based Colo Park circuit held up to the test – albeit a few little sloppy sections for drivers to navigate. Ultimately ensuring a few DNFs along the way.

A big thank you to all our volunteers and club staff who donated their time, yet again, to run another great event.

See you all again at round two.

Lachlan Campbell Secures 2023 NSW Off Road Racing Championship Titles

Outright Championship Driver and SXS Pro Championship Driver.

At the recent NSW Off Road Racing Championship presentation dinner, it was announced that Lachlan Campbell had emerged victorious as the Outright Championship Driver and SXS Pro Championship Driver.

Despite attending university 600kms away from home, Lachlan diligently balances academics with extensive travel, dedicating substantial time to the meticulous preparation of his race vehicle, engaging with sponsors, and actively participating in events with the assistance of his supportive friends.

Observers at race rounds may have noticed Lachlan's hands-on involvement, diagnosing issues with his vehicle between heats and ensuring it's race ready for the next challenge. His car has been race-proven with a 100% finishing rate in the 2023 NSW Off Road Racing Championship with plenty of class wins.

You may not realise that Lachlan does not simply arrive and drive just because his father Greg Campbell runs GRC Motorsport which builds off road racing vehicles, supports his many clients across Australia and is a seasoned national competitor.

Championships are won through consistency, a fact not lost on Lachlan. Amid inevitable challenges, he managed to accumulate crucial points throughout the season, recognising that every point contributes to the final standings.

Lachlan's victories in both the Outright Championship Driver and SXS Pro Championship Driver categories reflect not only his skill but also a mature and fast-paced driving style.

His exceptional progress over the past year positions him as one to watch in the coming years, as he sets his sights on larger events, aiming to establish himself as a formidable national competitor.

Congratulations to Lachlan for achieving the Outright Championship Driver and SXS Pro Championship Driver in the 2023 NSW Off Road Racing Championship.

Lachlan is a valued long term member of the Sydney Off Road Racing Association (SORRA).

Hi All,

Don't forget there is a working bee on at Colo Motorsport Park this weekend! Yep! That's right, Love to see you there. Any help will be appreciated.

For those who have already committed to giving a hand, thank you, and this is your reminder.

Had a pre working bee today getting some stuff ready for the big effort this weekend coming, the 28th & 29th October.

A Big Thank You to Cory Stone for finding and fitting the two sliding door sets to the timing/ control rooms. Also to our helpers , Michael Fittler, Stuart Fell and Robert Radar Effield who also did a power of work. Helping Cory fitting doors, repairing equipment ready for this weekends working bee, moving clay & loam to the dirt circuit to fill some divots , grading, loading, all happening.

They still left quite a bit to do still, so don't worry about not getting a job or two to do, there is a job for you.

Ian Irons ‘The Flying Pieman’

Sydney Off Road Racing Association (SORRA) Club Patron, Track Coordinator & Life Member.
NSW Off Road Racing Championship inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Ian Irons is a founding member of the Sydney Off Road Racing Association (SORRA) club.
Ian began racing in 1976 (47 years ago) after buying an old floor pan buggy from Rick Austin complete with 1200cc VW engine which was soon upgraded to a 1600cc VW.
Ian’s first major race was in 1977 at the very first Goondiwindi followed by Hattah in 1978.
Since then, he has been at the forefront of Off Road Racing particularly in NSW.

The Sydney Off Road Racing Association (SORRA) was offered the opportunity to take up the lease on the property Colo Motorsport Park on the 1st of January 1994 after satisfying conditions set down by Crown Lands Dept, NSW Dept Of Soil & Conservation, Environmental Protection Authority, Hawkesbury City Council, NSW Police and CAMS (now known as Motorsport Australia). Ian was a big part in bringing this to fruition.

At a club level he has achieved SORRA Outright Champion Driver in 1983 and Class 2 Champion in 1983 and 1991.

Ian took part in the 1988 Bicentennial Wynns Safari with Steve Dowse in a Toyota Hilux which ended with the diff breaking in half somewhere in central Queensland.

At a National level Ian has competed at Goondiwindi, Hattah, Inglewood, Tara, Waikerie, Kooralbyn Valley, Dubbo, Griffith and the various incarnations of the Bridgestone International at Kempsey.

Ian sat for many years on the NSW Off Road Panel lending his expertise to the organisation and running of the NSW Tri-Series and from there, the organisation which runs the NSW Off Road Championship.

In 2011 Ian was awarded the SORRA Ross Barnes Memorial Club Supporter of the year.

In 2011 Ian was honoured as a member of the NSW Off Road Racing Championship’s Hall of Fame who are recognised participants, either as competitors or as officials, who are also considered to embody the spirit of Off Road Racing and to have made a significant contribution to the sport.

Ian has been the Club President, a competitor, a volunteer Official and is still an active member of the club attending monthly meetings and he visits the track several times a week in his capacity as the volunteer SORRA Track Coordinator.

The Sydney Off Road Racing Association (SORRA), through Ian, has been a long-time member of the Hawkesbury Sports Council and the club has obtained financial assistance for the purchase of several second-hand pieces of machinery to maintain the track at Colo Motorsport Park.

The 2019 Gospers Mountain bushfires totally destroyed the club’s facilities, equipment, machinery and vehicles at Colo Motorsport Park and in the subsequent 2020 & 2021 COVID pandemic years there were very limited sporting activities.

With the easing of the COVID pandemic restrictions it was imperative that we communicated with and encouraged members and the wider Hawkesbury Community that we were open again for them to enjoy the Free ‘Come & Try’ Junior Driver Training, the Khanacross and Off Road Racing Motorsport activities in the outdoors. Rogaining (long distance orienteering) is another sport held on these grounds.

As the volunteer SORRA Track Coordinator, Ian is also one of the key members of the SORRA Committee who organise these important events.

After the bushfires, floods and COVID, Ian was tirelessly involved in club meetings, talking to the Hawkesbury Council, lobbying local politicians and coordinating working bees to rebuild the facilities at Colo Motorsport Park.

Ian has always worked at promoting the sport through his involvement with the local Hawkesbury Radio FM 89.9 Hawkesbury Community radio station and writing articles for the local newspapers.

Ian’s hands on work at Colo Motorsport Park has led him to become a proficient operator of a loader, back hoe, grader, excavator and tip truck.

It should be acknowledged that dedicated and passionate volunteers like Ian are few and far between, and he is the ‘beating heart’ of the Sydney Off Road Racing Association (SORRA).

Sydney Off Road Racing Association (SORRA) is hugely indebted to Ian for his support over a long period and to this end Ian was made a Life Member of SORRA as well as the Club Patron.

2023 makes Ian’s 47 ^th year of involvement in Motorsport and we hope there are many more to come.

Ian was recently part of a special SORRA committee tasked with building a new SORRA website to promote and communicate with potential and existing club members.

Ian is also involved with all aspects of SORRA including the track and facilities at Colo Motorsport Park putting in a significant effort along with all the other Club volunteers.

SORRA's next event in the Club Championship is the "Thornleigh Car Clubs" Khanacross

SORRA's next event in the Club Championship is the "Thornleigh Car Clubs" Khanacross , which is being run at Colo Motorsport Park on September 9th.

And you are all invited to be a part of, as it is part of the SORRA point score for the end of year awards.

The Sup Regs and other info will be passed on to you shortly. It will all be available on the SORRA website https://www.sorra.com.au/

And on the Facebook page. Thornleigh CC use a lot of the tracks that you would normally use, but a few little changes to make it interesting. Somebody else doing all the organizing is another incentive to check.

They hold this event each year on the property and this year it was thought, that it would be a good addition to the SORRA Club calendar.

Also, just to keep you on your toes, Toyosports are holding their Day/ Night Autocross on the 16th September on the Dirt circuit, Georges Camp, southern end. Put that one in your race diary too.

Should be a great couple of events to have a play at, maybe,,"you" might be able to get one of the entries paid as a "fathers day" present!! ( Don't thank me yet. See how you go first. lol) What a bad thought.

The next Club meeting will be on the 5th September, at Sydney Motorsport Park. Suite 4 , above the pit garages.

Hi fellow competitors

I trust you all had a great weekend, or day out if you didn't do both events.

I'm worn out, lol.

I am going to start by thanking those involved with the SORRA khanacross.

I strongly suggest that our members keep an eye on their calendar for upcoming events.

They have a great little thing going on called driver training where they run the kids ( or even 1st timers ) around before their first event and make sure that the kids have some car skills before entering an event.

We did 6 tests twice totalling around 15 minutes of driving, some good value.unfortunately the roads did chop a bit in some places with the volume of cars but all in all there was some long test on good hard flat open roads as well.

The day started with lunch consisting of beef and cheese pies and sausage sizzle, then all hell broke loose and in less than 4 hours all was done. we all enjoyed the pizza dinner then Team Toyosport stole what seemed like the majority of their trophies.

The following morning we started with Bacon & egg rolls and set up and were on track by 10 am, I think.

Shane Ramsay ran the grader over the already prepped track on Saturday afternoon. The track looked like a freeway, flat and wide with some of the usual bad bits gone., knocked 3 runs out and stopped for lunch by 1pm which consisted of Hamburgers with salad, paties, cheese and onion, wow. foodies weekend away ! there is evidence of Paul Shannon and Stuart Fell at the hot plates.We had a bunch of now shows resulting in up to 7 official runs undertaken by most.

The track was slippy in places, a bit dusty and mostly smooth with 2 major "bang" bits, 1 near the dam and 1 on the hill causing some damage for some but mostly ok

accident wise we had 1 real close near miss that was nearly a huge crash but somehow was saved, 1 beached car and 2 other recoveries down the bottom of the hill that the Jacksons took care of.

Thanks goes out to Francess for the food shopping and a whole bunch of behind scenes secret squirrel stuff she does, Tara, Ruby and Francess helping out in the timing tower in Steve and Matts absence. We were thinking of you guys. I recall Dave and Dean Noble on the start line and Stuart "environmental disaster" Fell chipping in there too and the Sallow's with extinguisher duties. I will thank anyone that did anything to help during the day, it is all appreciated even if it goes unnoticed, it is needed so we keep the wheels turning.

I need to thank the few people, you know who you are that just stayed for a couple of minutes to help pack up, its not that a hard a job so don't skip out next time, chip in, many hands makes light work.

Colo Driver Training, Khanacross & Autocross Weekend July 2023

The weekend started with Driver Training with seven people learning some new skills. Participants in the training were aged from 12 upwards, with a great cross section of skills from kids having their very first go at driving to younger adults driving on dirt for the first time, adding to their driving resume.

Thank you to all the people involved in making the Driver Training happen. The officials, the trainers that jumped in the cars with the learners, and Brad, who put so much time and effort into setting up all the courses for the Driver Training and Khanacross event.

It’s great to see how the Driver Training participants learn new skills and become more confident over the course of the day.

A break for lunch, with John Aouchen looking after the Bar-B-Q, getting everyone fed and ready for the next part of the day.

The Khanacross was held on 6 different tracks, with two runs on each. Times in Khanacross are usually pretty tight - this event was no exception. Competition in each of the classes was hard fought throughout the afternoon with close times making for a great day of competition for all.

Marty Dal-Santo (Subaru Impreza H6) took out the fastest time in the Khanacross with Stuart Fell (Yamaha YXZ1000 SXS) 2nd fastest, with Paddy Boylan (Yamaha YXZ1000 SXS) very close in 3rd.

Marty took the Modified 2wd 4WD Production Vehicles Class and Stuart the SXS Class. Pete Sallows (Subaru Impreza 2.5L) won G Class Naturally Aspirated, with Shane McIlvenna (Subaru WRX 2.5 ) the G Class Turbo winner.

Ruby Martin (Subaru Impreza 2L) cleared away from her Junior All wheel drive class competitors to take the win in that class. Dave Noble (Toyota Corolla 1800) the victor in C Class,1600-2000cc. He was followed in by Adam Panetta (Mazda 323 1800), then Russel West (Nissan 2L Pulsar) 2nd & 3rd respectively.

Kip Frost (Ford Fiesta 1600) took home the gold in B class (1300-1600cc) with Jason Moore (Holden Rodeo 3600) the winner in the over 3000cc Class E.

The Ladies class (and it was a Classy Class) was won by Frances Tolhurst (Subaru Impreza 2L), with Sharyn Lee-Robins (Toyota RAV4 2L) 2nd and Juliette Gibney-Quinteros (Subaru Impreza 2L) picking up 3rd.

Great to see all the juniors in the mix. Ruby Martin, finishing the best of the Junior AWD class, with Daniel Aouchen (Subaru Impreza 2L) 2nd. Lucas Frost (Ford Fiesta) took out 1st place in the Junior 2WD class, with Liam Murray (Subaru Impreza 2L) 2nd and Jessie Watman (Mitsubishi Lancer 1500) in 3rd.

A couple of the entrants had minor altercations with shrubbery, others had different dramas to keep their day interesting. One of which, was a black Subie who completed their Saturday racing, then misplaced the key for their car. A trip home to see if they could find the spare key, to no avail, and then Sunday spent trying to get car going in some way, the steering lock had now come into play to complicate things a little more, making it even more difficult to get it onto the trailer.

A big, BIG thank you to all the Officials, timers, and helpers for all your work that helped make this event work so well.

The Presentation of Trophies for the Saturdays Khanacross was held at the conclusion of the event, followed by the Pizza guys arriving to feed us all. What more could you ask for to top off a great day of racing.

Sundays Toyosport Autocross event on the Dirt Circuit at Georges Camp was a change for competitors, the fun began again with more close racing amongst all classes. 35 starters fronted for the fray - it all started in earnest at 9am with a good number of the cars backing up from the day before.

At this point it would be remiss of me not to thank Frances Tolhurst for the great idea of combining the two Clubs to create this combined event and to both Toyosport & SORRA for taking up that initiative and making it happen.

NSW OFF ROAD CLUB RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION

The Sydney Off Road Racing Association has been recognised at a national level for its growth in participation after being nominated for a National Sports & Physical Activity Convention award.

The convention is an Australia-wide event where individuals from around the country from the sport, health and wellness, fitness and recreation industry come together to network and share knowledge.

As part of the convention are the Australian Sport, Recreation and Play Industry Innovation Awards, which has the purpose of recognising individuals and organisations for their growing participation and innovation.

With 12 awards part of the celebration, the Sydney Off Road Racing Association has been nominated for the Marketing and Communications, which recognises an organisation for its communication messages that innovatively activates the community for more people to participate in community sport.

A previous recipient of Motorsport Australia’s Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund, the Sydney Off Road Racing Association has seen significant growth over the past few years, having recovered from a devastating fire that destroyed all of its facilities.

The awards take place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on 27-28 July.

A great first up event for the Club for 2023, with seven people registering to do the Driver Training.

There was a cross section of all ages doing the training, with some getting acquainted with driving for the first time, some choosing to learn to change gears & drive a manual gearbox car and others getting some seat time in the their new (to them) cars. From all reports, they enjoyed the experience with the trainers & gave praise for their ability to get the information needed across to them, also for the patience shown by the trainers. Most said they would be back for the next one in July.

Next part of the day, after the sausage sizzle for the lunch break, was the Khanacross. The first Club Championship event for 2023 was a great success. Twelve cars fronted for this series of tests, with the fastest male of the day being Marty Del Santo taking out the AWD class and Ruby Martin, the fastest Female of the day taking out her class, the 2WD class. Ruby was also the fastest Junior on the day too. There was close competition between all the classes and in all of those classes, making for a good days racing for all.

A big thank you to all our Officials, our Timers and everybody that put all that work in to make it happen.

See you at the next event, The NSW Off Road Championship Rnd at Colo Motorsport Park on the 3 ^rd & 4 ^th June.

The next Driver Training and Khanacross event will be the fourth Saturday in July, the 22 ^nd .

Working Bee & Family Fun Day

The hardworking committee and members of SORRA are now focusing their efforts on track improvement, facility upgrades and a Family Fun weekend firmly on the agenda since the December meeting this year. With a very busy calendar ahead for 2023, all your efforts will clearly show with the host of other behind the scenes improvements on the way also.

A unique Working Bee will be held on the 14th and 15th of January where those in attendance will be treated with a social get together followed by a Family Fun Day in a controlled environment. Trail bike riding and rally driving.

In addition, the club was donated a 40ft Container. Which is being converted into the new timing/control centre, which will be positioned on top of the two existing 20ft containers there at the moment.

As far as Working Bees go, this one will be a lot of fun and a huge success. Check out previous photos below, you’ll see for yourself. Make sure you book out that weekend to come “lend a hand” and have fun camping out with the all the other industrious off road racing families.

I’m sure their will be a lot hard working families, there are many to name, though I won’t for fear of missing someone out, but we are thankful for everyone’s efforts no matter how large or small and I’m sure you’ll all appreciate their determination when you next visit Colo Motorsport Park!

It would be awesome if everyone could bring some chain saws, tools, and plenty of water to keep hydrated! Any questions feel free to email or call.

Working Bee & Family Fun Day

If you haven’t been to a working bee lately…things have changed and so have the grounds at Colo Motorsport Park!

The hardworking committee and members of SORRA have had track improvement, facility upgrades and Family Fun firmly on the agenda since the AGM early this year…and those efforts are clearly showing with a host of other behind the scenes improvements on their way.

A unique Working Bee was held over the 3rd weekend of September 2018 where those in attendance were treated to endless wood fired pizza for dinner, a massive bonfire and social get together followed by Family Fun Day in a controlled environment trail bike fun ride the following morning.

Many were in attendance and an enormous amount of work carried out. To mention but a few, the main driveway has been widened and a large amount of waste collected and disposed. Most evident for those that haven’t been there for some time will be the redesigned pit and camping area enabling competitors and their crew to setup for the weekend and be right by their competition vehicles the whole time.

In addition, the club’s storage containers have all been realigned in readiness for an adjoining roof system to allow all weather machine storage and workspace. Many Khanacross cars beyond repair have been removed and recycled, the Georges Camp track has been groomed extensively as well as a multitude of other improvements for the benefit of all members, guests and track hirers.

As far as Working Bees go, this one was a lot of fun and a huge success. Check out the photos, you’ll see for yourself and when another big one comes up, make sure you book out that weekend to come “lend a hand” and have fun camping out with the all the other industrious off road racing families.

Toyosports Autocross Round 1 at Colo Motorsport Park

The Toyosports Car Club Of NSW have been conducting Autocross “Time Attack” events at Georges Camp for many, many years now and after repeated invites, the Watman kids finally took up the offer to enter and compete in Tahlia’s mighty Holden Astra.

SORRA had prepped the track well, and even though midweek rain did threaten to slow the cars a little on a slippery surface early on, all were well in control
knowing the track was coming to them and with seven laps to set you’re your best time, the smart money was on a quick lap just after lunch.

Lunch is provided by the club as part of entry and was a great time to swap stories and rev up each other a little. None of the 29 starters had any
issues and all were primed for action after being very well fed.

The earlier slippery conditions provided a more level playing field with the four wheel drive rally cars and two wheel drive club cars swapping outright fastest times. Once the track “gripped up” though, turbo all-wheel drive was a hard act to follow but let me tell you, no one gave up and you could clearly see the no brake attitude of the front running shopping cars going all out to beat the race bred rally machines. These guys play for keeps, while at the same time sharing all their experience and driving tips with James and Tahlia.

In the end, there wasn’t a broken car to be found and smiles for miles from both the racers and spectators alike.
It was a great event, a very welcoming club and a fun track.

SORRA Khanacross Round 1 at Colo Motorsport Park

Clear blue skies and warm weather greeted the 29 starters for Round 1 of the SORRA Khanacross this year. A favourite of the kids is the ‘Come & Try’ Driver Training which is always well attended and received by the juniors.

Kids as young as 12 are instructed in the basics automobile maintenance and road rules before they are given the chance to drive various cars around a safe circuit with adult instructors where they learn to control a car, safely brake, reverse and negotiate obstacles all with the view to teaching better car control skills.

The D&M Auto Electrics crew set out five separate challenging tests for the afternoons Khanacross event, each to be repeated twice. A host of SORRA volunteers were on hand, expertly controlling another fantastic event, which once again was run flawlessly!

Vehicles of all sorts proceeded to race around the various tests with Off Road Racing buggies, side by sides, and every day family cars providing great entertainment and the competition was hot. There were few mechanical issues, with most of the field completing the ten tests fast and furiously and all displaying great car control and technique.

Look out for a few Khanacross competitors entering the upcoming NSW Off Road Racing Championship Round 1 event being held on 14th & 15th April at Colo Motorsport Park.

Please note that Round 2 of the Khanacross will take place on the 23rd June 2018 at Colo Motorsport Park.

What is a Khanacross?

What is a Khanacross?

A Khanacross is a competition conducted on unsealed surfaces, bitumen or a combination of both and involving a series of timed tests of various layouts. Each test shall be designed to test the acceleration, braking and general manoeuvrability of the vehicle and the skill and judgement of the driver.

The Khanacross event is held at Colo Motorsport Park in the lead up to Off Road Racing events.

The key focus of the Khanacross event is to have fun and drive at your own speed and/or your level of experience permits.

There are a number of dirt tracks/circuits that are used for Khanacross, for example around the arena in front of the main camp and through the bush around various dirt tracks. These tracks although quite challenging in some places are a lot of fun and enjoyed by teenagers and adults alike.

Our Khanacross event this round was a great success, with 24 drivers of all ages and levels of experience participating in this exciting and rewarding event.

The fantastic organising crew from D&M Auto Electrics had changed up the ‘cloverleaf’ of four different tracks for this rounds event, incorporating a new ‘garage’, which had to be driven into and then reversed back out of in order to continue on one of the courses.

This new challenge was well received by the participants, allowing for further skills to be developed and practiced on the track.

The cars held up well, with very few issues occurring on the day, due to the preparation and maintenance undertaken by the crew from D&M Auto Electrics at the SORRA Working Bee held prior to the event.

At the end of the event there was a trophy presentation for the Khanacross participants across a number of car classes and participant ages.
